〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Squall Leonhart
CHARACTER AGE: 17
SERIES: Final Fantasy VIII
CHRONOLOGY: Post game
CLASS: Mercenary Hero
HOUSING: Anywhere but Heropa.

BACKGROUND: Squall at Final Fantasy Wikia.

Squall is from a world where technology and magic go hand in hand; where people get around on trains and flying buildings, while Sorceresses try to enslave the masses with their magic. He is an orphan, one of many in a world that sees conflict regularly. He is raised in Balamb Garden and becomes a SeeD, a mercenary group that on the outside seems to take just about any job given to them. In reality, they are a force prepared to take on Sorceresses, should they ever come to threaten the world.

PERSONALITY: To say that Squall is an introvert would be a bit of an understatement. The majority of his dialogue is introspection, and he rarely ever says more than what he needs to say. This makes him come off as cold and aloof, and the fact that his usual response to things he doesn't like/finds annoying/isn't interested in is, "...whatever," doesn't really help matters. A number of characters attempt to reach out to him in the beginning, but he staunchly refuses to let them through his cold exterior, making him seem thoughtless in regards to their feelings.

That isn't to say he is actually thoughtless. Quite the opposite; the thinks too much about others, the world around him, and just about everything else. Squall internalizes everything, and rarely says what he's really thinking unless prompted, and even then, he's usually reluctant to voice his thoughts. He internalized to the point of being unhealthy, and as with most people that bottle their thoughts and emotions, he can explode when the pressure of everything he's holding in gets to be too much. The best example of this was when everyone believed Seifer had been executed after his capture by Galbadian forces. He had screamed that he didn't want people talking about him in the past tense, revealing a lot about his true character.

Squall is seventeen years old. He was orphaned at birth, never knowing his parents, and clung to his big sister until she too was taken away. He experienced loss at a very young age, and forced himself to deal with it and "be strong for sis". Being strong apparently meant never crying or complaining that he was alone, and led to his almost obsessive internalization. He never really resolved the fact that he lost people important to him before the events of the game, and can't handle the idea of it happening again, so he resolves this by not getting close to anyone. Even Seifer as a rival was too close, to the point that he couldn't handle the thought of him being dead.

Eventually, however, he's given no choice but to open up to others. Throughout the course of the game he reveals himself to be a natural born leader, and he is continuously pressed into leadership roles; first for a band of three people to aid a resistance group, then a group of six to head an assassination mission, and then the entirety of Balamb Garden in a miniature war against the Sorceress. He is extremely reluctant and almost resentful about this at first -- he says more than once that he feels like he wasn't given a choice but to take on a responsibility that he really wasn't prepared for. He feels like he has to take on the responsibilities of being a leader all on his own, and it takes his team, whom he accidentally found himself close to, to remind him that he doesn't have to keep shouldering the burden of leadership on his own.

It takes some time, but Squall gradually starts to open up to the people around him. It's Rinoa that's largely responsible for this, as he open, go getting personality fills in the gaps of Squall's calm and quiet, forcing him to take actions he wouldn't normally take. It's this bond with Rinoa that allows others to sneak into Squall's personal bubble as well, but it isn't until he realizes he's in love with Rinoa that he starts being open and honest with how he really feels. Through them he learns that, while loss will eventually be something that affects his life, he's not helpless against it anymore. He knows that that he is strong and can fight to protect the people he cares about. It's that strength and faith in the people he loves that carries him through the end of the game, even as he gets lost in time and needs help to return to the present.

In the end, while Squall is still a quiet, deeply thoughtful young man, he learned that he doesn't have to solely rely on himself, and knows how to reach out to others when he needs help.

POWER:
Magic Junction
While the junction system in Final Fantasy VIII can be complicated to the point that many people set the game down and never looked at it again, I am going to damn well simplify this to the best of my ability!

In Mask or Menace, Squall will be able to see faint sparkles that will serve as points where he can draw magic from. At first, he will only be able to see a few of them, but as time goes on, he'll be able to see more points with progressively more powerful magic. These magic draw points can be anywhere in game, from out in the middle of a park, to coming out of someone's toilet.

Squall can stock up to 100 draws of magic, and once he has them, they grant him specific power ups, ranging from increasing his attack to granting him protection from various status ailments. How powerful this is depends on how much magic he has stocked, with 100 being the most powerful and 1 being the least. He can only acquire up to 9 draws of magic from any point, with the rarer magics providing a less likely chance of producing a full 9. He can also make use of this magic himself. Casting magic depletes one draw of magic per cast, and in turn, affects his stats.

Available magic, what they do, and how they affect Squall are listed as follows:
* Blizzaga: Inflict ice damage on a single enemy - Increases Squall's ability with attack magic.
* Water: Inflict water damage on a single enemy - Increases Squall's endurance.
* Bio: Inflicts poison damage on an enemy, with a chance of actually poisoning the target - Increases Squall's chances of hitting a target.
* Tornado: Inflicts wind damage to all enemies - Increases Squall's chances of evading an attack.
* Meteor: Hits ten random enemies in a targeted area - Grants minor protection from all elemental attacks.
* Curaga: Heals allies - Increases the number of hits Squall can take.
* Esuna: Removes negative status effects - Increases Squall's ability with defensive/healing magic.
* Meltdown: Inflicts non-elemental damage on an enemy and weakens defense - Grants minor protection from status attacks.
* Pain: Has a chance of inflicting blindness, silence, and poison on an enemy - When Squall physically attacks, he has a chance of inflicting the same status effects.
* Apocalypse: Extremely rare magic that inflicts extreme non-elemental damage to all enemies in a target area. - Increases Squall's strength.

Renzokuken
Squall's limit break in Final Fantasy VIII basically amounts to a lot of flashy sword moves, but he does have the occasional special action that goes along with it. These are magical in nature, but are separate from Squall's Magic Junction.
* Rough Divide: As if slashing an enemy in half weren't enough, but this skill follows it up with a magical blast that follows after Squall's sword.
* Fated Circle: Squall's gunblade charges up with energy, which he then spins around, unleashing a circular shock wave on enemies.
* Blasting Zone: Squall's gunblade gather's energy into a massive pillar (apparently big enough to be seen from space, if you believe in-game mechanics), which he then brings down on his enemies.
* Lion Heart: Undoubtedly Squall's best skill, this attack has Squall charging his gunblade with magical energy before it hits a single enemy 17 times.

[ He needed a favor. He knew he needed a favor. ]

...

[ Squall knew it was perfectly all right to ask publicly for help. It wouldn't be a problem, and no one would look down on him for it. ]

...

[ ...he couldn't shake his unease about exposing himself like this, though. In Balamb Garden it was different; people knew him there. People knew that he was reluctant to speak his mind, even with Rinoa at his side, poking at him until he spit out what he wanted to say. People were patient there, and would let him get out what he needed to, no matter how awkward it may have sounded. Right now, he felt that he was naked in the middle of Trabia snow, with everyone seeing and judging him and finding him lacking. ]

...

[ ...he couldn't do this. ]

...forget it.

[ He cut the feed. Next time he needed help, he was just going to settle for text. ]

FINAL NOTES: No, Squall is not dead at the end of disc one, even the director said so, someonepleasestopwiththisdumbtheory.
